Local artist Denny O'Malley combines his passion for Chicago with his expert knowledge of intaglio printmaking, an ancient technique dating to the Middle Ages. During the process, O'Malley draws a simple image onto a copper or zinc plate. The plate is then dipped in acid, permanently burning the image into the metal. Ink is then rolled over the plate, and the plate and paper are run through a press, transferring the image to the paper and producing special aesthetic results based on the choice of ink and paper selected. From there, O'Malley finishes each limited-edition piece individually by hand using watercolors.
Sawbridge Studios, with locations in Chicago's River North and Winnetka, carries the most extensive collection of Denny's work anywhere. Subjects range from the city's Brown Line, River, and Lincoln and Millennium Parks, to educational landmarks like St. Ignatius, University of Chicago, and Loyola University to U.S. Cellular Field and Wrigley Field.
